(1) Can you tell me the current year?
(2) Now let's try for the month. Can you tell me what month we are in?
(3) Let's try that again. Here's a hint, it's the month that comes after June.
(4) Correct!! Now let's try the year question again ....

FWIW ... as an 80+ year old, making small-talk fun of our own and even other's mental decline is pretty common. It's how we include ourselves with other's in our generation. To deny some degree of mental decline is like a denial of reality. Much better to face up to it than pretend otherwise. The funniest is a family friend who calls attention to his next semi-annual doctor visit with the need to study and prepare for the memory test. Like be sure you know the year, month and date before checking in. If uncertain, ask someone and write it on the palm of your hand with a ball point pen.

People in their 80s and 90s who are sharp as tacks don't brag about it, unless trying to divert attention from memory slippage. By the time we reach our 70s and 80s, most of us have figured out that wisdom trumps smarts and we can get by with just looking up what we don't know.
