I have issues with the minimum wage BUT I also have issues with people not making enough to live on so it is a catch 22. When we raise the MW we see inflation increase and the minimum wage no longer covers cost of living.

@Doomflower That’s why several countries have it tied to inflation, instead of a set number every decade or so. So it never falls behind.

@Doomflower It's bulldust.
1. America’s 614 billionaires grew their net worth by a collective $931 billion during Covid (up to Dec). They don't pay their way with taxes. They get a free ride from governments. Welfare for the wealthy is everywhere when you look.
2. Minimum wages don't destroy the economy, they trigger spending.

@Abstraction 1) I never said or implied they didn't. 2) it isn't the minimum wage that destroys the economy. It is the welfare wealthy.

My coworker makes $15 an hour before the minimum wage. If they raise the wage to $15 an hour he is now getting paid proportionately less than he was before. So shouldn't he be getting paid more?

Also big companies don't care that it doesn't even make a dent in their profits, they use the minimum wage as an excuse to raise prices just a bit in proportion. However the little companies have to raise their prices because otherwise they can't pay their workers.

The way I see it the ONLY way to make this better is to heal humans as a whole. It is our nature to be greedy.
@Doomflower Whenever the minimum wage goes up, people making more also tend to get raises.

@LeopoldBloom except when they don't. You think chain stores are gonna do that?
@Doomflower It won't be as pronounced as in the past, but anyone getting $15 an hour now will probably get a raise to $16. The minimum wage has never doubled before. Although I would expect it to go up gradually. The minimum salary for overtime exemption will probably go up as well.

All of this assumes that every Democrat is on board with a minimum wage hike and that the Republicans don't filibuster it. My view is that it has almost no chance of passing, even as part of a budget reconciliation (which can't be filibustered). The Democrats would have to argue that raising the minimum wage affects government revenues, because higher wages would result in more taxes. But since it's not a direct effect, the Senate parliamentarian may not let them get away with it.

If it's not clear, budget reconciliations are only permitted on bills that affect government revenue and spending, and can only be used three times per year, on bills affecting revenue, spending, and the debt ceiling, but in practice these are usually combined into one omnibus bill. So it couldn't be used to expand the Supreme Court, or admit DC and PR as states.
