I have a 12 year old niece who is half black half white but looks black and she lives in a small Colorado community where she is one of the only two kids in her predominantly white middle school. She has been frightened to death to return to school this fall ever since this whole BLM thing started. She’s afraid of being the target of discrimination and retaliation. So being black in Colorado for her has presented some mental health issues of living in fear. But only since the recent BLM elevation. I don’t necessarily think it was an issue prior to that so this may be an unwarranted case but I can guarantee that she’ll attract more attention from everyone, both positive and negative once the in person classes starts back up only because she is black. I don’t know if it’s a public health crisis but there is something. I just feel terrible for her.
