Experiment In Space "Time Scanner" set for demonstration

30 United Nations delegates are on their way up to the space station Prometheus for a demonstration of TimeScan. The TimeScan projector discharges a modified particle beam which harmlessly bathes the Earth's surface and unfreezes moments in time, sending back "videos of the past" to the space station lab on a wall of shimmering light, which resembles an enormous movie screen. Elon Musk and his associates can literally scan any era of the Earth's past they choose.
First on their agenda: an exploration of the Mesozoic age, to understand why the mighty dinosaurs became extinct 65 million years ago.

A vaguely similar plot device was used in Arthur Clarke and Steven Baxter's Light of Other Days novel.

Success rapidly turn to unexpected tragedy as a series of devastating explosions rocked Central Operations. The TimeScan demonstration began as expected and for a while tantalizing images of a Devonian swamp materialized through the static.
Then suddenly, just before the explosions, a pair of sinister, reptilian eyes flashed on the screen! At a loss for explanations, Elon Musk tried to minimize the crisis by telling everyone that the installation was "secure".
But more than a few guests voiced concern about their safety, now that TmeScan has proven unstable and potentially a dangerous process.
