witkoff is unelected and has absolutely no experience of, or standing in, diplomacy.

True, but Witkoff and Kushner, as unlected as they are, are in charge of the most critical foreign and sensitive jobs since the end of the cold war. Not to mention that Kushner, ten years ago, was put in charge of all US weapons sales in the Middle East. Outside of the control of Congress and totally unaccountable to anyone.

I hope voters remember this next week.
