Why America is doomed?

Trump’s approval rating among Republicans currently hovers in the mid-to-high 70s. We must turn to psychological factors for an explanation.

Identity and belonging
Many groups provide a strong sense of community, purpose, and identity. Leaving can mean losing friends, family, status, and the framework through which a person understands the world. The cost of leaving can feel greater than the cost of staying.

Commitment and sunk costs
Once someone has invested years of their life, donated money, sacrificed relationships, or publicly defended the group, admitting it was a mistake can be extremely painful. Continuing to believe may feel easier than confronting those losses.

Cognitive dissonance
When evidence conflicts with deeply held beliefs, people often experience psychological discomfort. One way to reduce that discomfort is to reinterpret the evidence rather than abandon the belief. This can lead followers to rationalize behavior they would otherwise reject.

Social pressure
Humans are highly influenced by the people around them. If everyone in a person's social circle supports the leader, dissent can feel isolating and frightening.

Charismatic authority
Some leaders are exceptionally skilled at projecting certainty, confidence, and special insight. People often find certainty attractive, especially during periods of uncertainty, grief, loneliness, or social upheaval.
