It sounds so typically him but I think it's wide of the mark. Apparently the administration had already become disillusioned with her when she skipped an in person meeting in Caracas and had failed to convince them subsequently how her party could successfully assume the reins. Her support for sanctions had also pissed a lot of business people off in Venezuela. (The same people who will have the biggest megaphone when talking to Trump.)
