A fleet of two dozen ships the size of the 35,000 ton Alaska-class sized battlecruisers?
Unlikely that Congress will approve the funding.
On the other hand what I have been advocating is the nuclear refueling of the Nimitz-class aircraft carriers so they can serve another 25 years until we get back up to 15 carrier battlegroups and to stop decommissioning the Ticonderoga-class Aegis cruisers. It's still a carrier navy and we need more ships to protect them.
The lead ship was commissioned in 1983. We should have started working on an eventual replacement class during the Obama administration. So I agree that a new cruiser class is needed to replace the Ticos. But its focus should be on missile defense, including anti-ballistic missile defense.
China isn't going to wait until 2040 to make its move on Taiwan. And if they do manage to disable or sink one or two of our carriers we just can't build another and put her to sea in the same conflict. The Ticos have also better air defense capabilities than the Arleigh Burke Aegis destroyers and have a larger missile magazine capacity.
