Prominent conservatives are criticizing trump's latest move in making burning the flag a crime

Good to see that although they dislike the idea of burning a flag, they also like protecting free speech more. Still dislike conservative's politics but good to know that there are still some who would speak out too.

I have spent over 40 years in the Dept of Defense as either a soldier or civilitan and support those who burn the flag. I don't support burning the flag but support those who do it and the idea of the free speech that it represents. I have supported my country because of that exact idea that we are greater than a piece of cloth. We are what it represents, which is the freedom to burn it.

@rhouse a veteran was arrested for burning the flag, it's a shame the Trump administration has no respect for the constitution

@SatanBurger I agree. All Americans need to stand up and ensure our country survives this administration, then hopes we can fix what it has done. BTW- I don't speak on behalf of the department of defense but I can tell you that I have many friends/coworkers who feel the same way.
Trump hasn't made flag burning a crime; only Congress can do that.

I remember when this came up during the first Bush administration. I saw a cartoon with a hippie holding a burning flag and running with George H.W. Bush chasing him, and ignoring the burning city in the background.

@LeopoldBloom a veteran was recently arrested for burning the flag, he did make it a crime. Then again his administration also deleted emails and dhs officially said they don't know what's going on so they have no control anymore if this is a hint
BohoBabe · M
@LeopoldBloom Sure, but so what? Trump will just declare it a crime, then send the military in to occupy any city that doesn't enforce the law. Democrats will fight back by grumbling on social media. Maybe Chuck Schumer will write another strongly worded letter.
The free speech stuff is old fashioned. People say what the algorithm allows them to! And they only read what the algorithm allows.
If there's ever a "multi polar" internet, then we'll have to think. There's not.

Yeah, yeah. Whenever Trump's handlers use him to do something openly authoritarian, we get a handful of "principled" conservative Republicans who finally have to put their foot down. Then they go ahead and continue enabling whatever Trump and President Miller want to do. Most of these same people will shut up and tow the party line because they rather continue descending into Fascism if the alternative is paying a bit more in taxes.

@SatanBurger Ya know, when I was watching that video, I was happy for her, and I really do believe that anyone can change.
But the thing is, she actually was brainwashed. She was groomed into a religious community that believed homosexuality and abortion would destroy America, so she did what she believed was right. All of these Republicans who enable MAGA Fascism, they know better. Marco Rubio, Ted Cruz, Lindsey Graham, all of the sane Republicans, they know what MAGA is doing it wrong. But it's either Fascism or paying slightly more in taxes. So I don't think they're going to wake up and fight back, they already decided Fascism is the lesser evil for them.
It's funny, one of the few Republicans who honestly does believe the things she says is Marjorie Taylor Greene. I actually have more respect for her because at least she is living her beliefs, even if her policies would be a mega disaster.
SatanBurger · 36-40, F
@BohoBabe That's a good point. I can't say all of them are brainwashed as that also absolves them of responsibility and it shouldn't, they know exactly what they're doing.

Marjorie Taylor Greene was in the news lately saying that she didn't get respect from the gop as much as she liked. I thought that was stupid to not realize this until I realized that she may honestly believe what she says even if it's a lie. She thought she'd get respect from men who believe women shouldn't vote but then again when you're taught that you should be under men rather than a leader that's what that gets you.
BohoBabe · M
@SatanBurger I think continuing to live as a brainwashed adult requires some complicity. I have more sympathy for people born into these one church towns where everyone is heavily groomed, but that's not an excuse for bad actions by an adult who has the ability to examine their own beliefs.

Greene might also thought she'd be seen as "one of the good ones." Which is even sadder, because it means she doesn't realize how insane she comes off. Someone like Candace Owens gets a pass because even though she's black and female, she still comes across as smart and mentally stable. Whereas Greene probably annoys all the other Fascists.

The only credit I'll give them is that you should have to observe firepit type rules for it to count as speech
SatanBurger · 36-40, F
@Jackaloftheazuresand Agreed. Unrelated but I'm a strong believer in free speech but not hate speech. I feel like people can burn any flag they want, it's when it devolves into incitement to do something to someone for me.

In truth we need a mixture of people. People who love the United States and see the good in changing it for the better and people who dislike it but have valid criticisms are both warranted. If people listened to both we could figure out issues that need to be worked on, it's why opposing sides exists.

But I realize people don't think that way. However I'll defend burning a flag any day for the above reason.
Jackaloftheazuresand · 26-30, M
@SatanBurger Incitement should also be determined only from intent rather than outcome because I don't like grown adults pinning their own actions on someone else and people skirting around on admissions, what I mean with that is like when someone confesses to doing something with no prompting but they get away because there's no hard evidence they did what they said they did. So like when Al-qaeda claims attacks they may or may not have had a hand in, I want that added into their bounty since they want it so bad they can have it
SatanBurger · 36-40, F
@Jackaloftheazuresand I can agree with that.
