Intrinsic vs. Extrinsic Values

So I read this article today: https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2024/jan/29/donald-trump-americans-us-culture-republican

And it suggests that one of the big reasons Trump has become so popular is that he is the embodiment of extrinsic values that have come to dominate American culture over the past 100+ years. The way the article defined extrinsic values, I thought, why would anyone knowingly hold extrinsic values? They seem so shallow, vain, short-sighted, irresponsible, and selfish. By contrast, intrinsic values seemed clearly good. I mean, who could be against empathy, right? It made me wonder, was the author biased? Or does everyone see extrinsic values as negatively as I do?

So I hypothesized that the average Trump supporter who read this article must think one of two things.

A. Yes, Trump embodies extrinsic values, and America actually is better off for holding extrinsic values. Extrinsic values are really great for X reasons!

B. Of course extrinsic values are bad; however, the article is wrong, Trump and his supporters are the true champions of intrinsic values. It’s you liberals and progressives trying to push an agenda based on extrinsic values!

So any Trump supporters that have made it this far, I want to read your thoughts. Are extrinsic values actually good, or do y’all think you hold intrinsic values? Other explanations are welcome too. Please comment!
i am familiar with this condition.
I will go look at the article
i think there will be hiccups in the discussion
as the opinions will veer from the original definitions

I read the Monbiot article today. I think what he says is true and I'm a fan of his generally but it's hardly an original take.
I'm not a Trump supporter by any stretch, but I thinl that extrinsic values can be a good thing in moderation. It's the lack of intrinsic values that's troubling, along with the recognition that a society can't exist if everyone acts according to their own self interest without moderation.

It's been a long time since I read Hobbes.

I thought the poll would appear at the bottom of this post, I think it would have been less potentially confusing that way 🫤

@SteelHands That’s why I was asking, because things usually aren’t as clear cut as the author made it seem. So I figured that either Trump supporters must see something good in extrinsic values, or there must be some disagreement as to which side is truly championing the good intrinsic values.

You seem to suggest it is usually the former, so can you tell me what are the good connotations to extrinsic values? How could a country potentially benefit from emphasizing extrinsic over intrinsic values?
