But his lawyer,Robert Costello, told the Times that Giuliani will invoke attorney-client privilege if prosecutors question him about any exchanges between him and Trump.

But...if he never got paid by trump was he really his attorney?

There is no requirement of financial compensation to invoke attorney client privilege. Attorneys work pro bono all the time. The miranda rights that are required to be delivered before arrest, questioning or depositions state that if you cant afford an attorney, one will be provided. Attorneys are legaly obligated to keep confidential any legal discussion or advice, regardless of financial compensation.
