True. But the fact that so many were willing to go along would imply that many conservatives were actually fascists, too. Why else would they be so rabidly afraid of antifa, which is anti-fascist ? 🤔
@bijouxbroussard Its actually pretty hard for me to get my head around the idea of so many Trumpists actually being ideologically fascists, though, as opposed to being duped by Trump and the right wing media telling them that the real fascists are only on the left, Nazis were socialists, Pizzagate was real, and Antifa was actually behind the attack on the capitol.
@MistyCee I can believe that they’d support a police state—as long as the police look the way they think police should look and hold their values.
@bijouxbroussard I think they're more afraid of a "leftist police state" than they are actually enamoured of a right wing one though.

The ideology seems really shallow to me.
@MistyCee Our country actually has a solid history of right-wing policing, which many conservatives see as “the good old days”. There’s never been anything close to a leftist police state here. But they see anything approaching equality as “leftist”. As the saying goes, “when you’re used to privilege, equality feels like oppression”.
@bijouxbroussard Agreed, but even when Trump was in office, supposedly a "conservative" President, these folks were screaming about stuff like "corporate fascism" and similar nonsense like "cancel culture" from the left.

I get where they're more comfortable with the right than the left, but this populist movement seems more like reactionary malcontents than conservatives to me. The racist/xenophobic thing is only part of it the whole picture.
@MistyCee The whole “cancel culture” claim amuses me, considering the fact that conservatives were traditionally the book and record burners.
@bijouxbroussard it's no accident, I think that the Whatabout is so prevalent with Trumpism.

At it's heart, I think what drives it really is precognitive rather than any kind of actual ideology.

The whole Trump movement, and now most of the Republican Party, is premised on the social sanctification of pre-cognitive fears and disgust
