Trump vows "beautiful" deals with Democrats, but threatens "warlike" retaliation to probes

Washington Post
November 7, 2018

President Trump threatened Wednesday to retaliate with a "warlike posture" should the new Democratic House majority use it's subpoena power to launch investigations into his administration, warning that any probes would jeopardize prospects for any bipartisan deals.

During a lengthy and at time combative White House news conference, Trump repeatedly praised Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-CA), who could reclaim the speaker's gavel she lost eight years ago, and said his chances of striking agreements on legislation were greater with a divided government.

Trump, who had demonized Democrats in apocalyptic terms and attacked Pelosi on the campaign trail, said he looked forward to working with her on "a beautiful bipartisan-type situation."

He said they could find common ground on rebuilding the nation's infrastructure, lowering the cost of prescription drugs and refashioning trade policy.

This apparently deliberate lack of attempt at consistency makes it very hard to take anything he says at face value. We didn’t just forget everything else Trump said about Democrats and Pelosi over the last couple of years, even if he has. It’s like he can only live in the present, and neither the past or the future even exists.

@QuixoticSoul My response to anything Trump says whenever he says it...

It’s like Trump has split personality disorder. That is just one reason why demonizing the Democrats during his rallies was so stupid and short-sighted for someone who claimed to be “master of the deal”. It didn’t occur to him then that he might need the other half of his government ? 🙄

@bijouxbroussard He’s an absolute fraud as far as being a deal maker. He could barely make deals with his own party having all the reins in his hands. He’ll prove even less capable with a split government, which of course, he’ll blame any failures on anyone but himself. Meanwhile, any deals that actually do get made will be done so while he spectates, and if any of those are successful, he’ll emerge from his office with his hands raised declaring victory for a battle he never fought.
@bijouxbroussard Trump is a terrible negotiator. In business, his strategy was to only attempt to reach deals that he was willing to walk away from. If you're willing to do that, and your opponent wants the deal more than you do, you can screw them over and look like a genius.
