Donald Trump is a “textbook racist” whose “words and behaviours demonstrate considerable prejudicial bias”, a Duke University professor has claimed.

The President’s “insensitive, disrespectful and mean-spirited statements and actions” are consistent with a number of categories of racism including “insidious” and “symbolic” racism, according to Jay Pearson, an assistant professor at Duke’s Sanford School of Public Policy.

Mr Trump has in the past called racism an “evil” and white supremacists “repugnant”.

Prof Pearson wrote in the LA Times: “Throughout last year’s campaign and his first eight months in office, the president has expressed his bias through government orders and the presidential bully pulpit (systemic racism).

“Trump argued that as a ‘Mexican,’ US District Court Judge Gonzalo Curiel, who was born and raised in the United States, could not fairly arbitrate lawsuits related to Trump University (structural racism).

“For years, Trump protested, falsely, that Barack Obama was not born in the US and was consequently elected illegitimately (symbolic racism).”

These actions meet scholarly definitions of racist behaviour, he said. Symbolic racism involves rhetoric that delegitimises others, while structural racism assigns social value to people based on inherent differences, he added.

Following his initially equivocal response to the Charlottesville, Virginia riots earlier this year, Mr Trump explicitly condemned the racism on display when white supremacists took to the streets.

He said: “Racism is evil and those who cause violence in its name are criminals and thugs, including KKK, neo-Nazis, white supremacists, and other hate groups are repugnant to everything we hold dear as Americans.”

Trump seems like a nice guy, has a good family, great values, etc. I think you are being a little hard on him.

hi StrayaBro

@CopperCicada A lot of "people of faith" are anal assholes no better than Trump. It is opinions that are totally worthless that are given by many. We need to base our observations on what is getting done and on facts not opinions. I have the opinion Trump is an asshole but he is trying his best and means to get the right things done. JFK was a womanizer and probably favored the mafia but he did do some good things. Johnson did a lot of good for equal rights but was totally poor at other things. Lets try and be honest and base things on facts not what fake news is saying from either side.

@CopperCicada You know, there really SHOULD have been a mass exodus waaay before the election. Nothing personal but the hypocrisy of the religious is on full display and, in all honesty, it's a little disgusting.

@CopperCicada There's lots of paths up the mountain. For me, it usually comes down to walking the walk or talking the talk. While religion is a personal experience it's also a group experience. I think that's where a lot of "talking the talk" is found.

CopperCicada You did exactly what you stated;

"This is where the Trump fan swoops down and starts talking about Obama or Hillary."

"I am revolted by Trump's lack of character and integrity as a man. His administration is a freak show. I have little to say about "what he's accomplished" as he's done little but talk (and Tweet) and what he's been able to accomplish with executive order."

You have proven you are no different than those "where the Trump fan swoops down and starts talking about Obama or Hillary."

Look at yourself, are you being fair? Are you going after the potus just because you don't like him? It sounds like and you are no different than the Fake News people who do the same rather than base statements on facts.

@CopperCicada "As for the POTUS and his capacity to legislate-- history will determine that. He has to bring in ACA reform and/or tax reform in for a landing."

Anyone with half of a mind knows that cannot happen if the House and Senate will not back the President. Both sides do not want him and he is having a hard time making headway because of the crooks that favor the corporations that run this country.

You seem to be under the false impression that there is a difference between left and right in Washington. You are seriously wrong like many6 that are brainwashed into thinking so. Obama and Clinton were career politicians like the rest of them and so no better than the devil, both lied their asses off about Libya and yet the masses of libtards believed them.

I agree that the far right is as bad as they also think there is a difference in Washington. If there were any honest people in DC then things would change for the better. We are not going to see that happen unless WE as in everyone in this country decides to work to together and make a change. You have to get you mind off of what you are being fed by the media. Trump is not a good person but I would have to say he is somewhat more honest than Hillary or Obama could ever be. What WE have to do is not elect the crooks to begin with and it has to start in our local and state governments, then work up the ladder to the federal crooks.
