Gorbachev intended to start a reform movement, not overthrow the Soviet system. But he pulled on a thread and the whole thing came unraveled. The various nations, Ukraine, Estonia, Lithuania, Latvia, etc. brutally forced into the Soviet Union by Stalin, saw their chance for independence and took it. And so good bye USSR.
