Just on the fuzzy edge of being about to awake from a general anaesthetic, I felt a large, warm, dry, relaxed hand land gently on my scalp and forehead. A deep-throated warm voice said "you're fine."
As he walked away, I saw it was the surgeon who had operated on me, a young black man over 6 foot tall.

I cried with gratitude for that gesture of unconditional love.
