question for some of the younger people....

have you ever had conversations with your parents about how they communicated with people? like maybe how they passed notes in class, talked on a landline phone (rotary 馃ぃ) mailed letters or faxed?... you guys would have been lost in my youth 馃ぃ

I lived on a farm in northern Sweden up by the Arctic Circle. When my mom wanted to ask her neighbor down the road something, she would write a note on a piece of paper, then walk down the road and put it in the neighbor's mailbox and put the red flag up.... 馃摣

When our neighbor eventually retrieved her mail, she would put the flag back down... 馃摢

My mom would then look up the road at her neighbor's mailbox with binoculars from an upstairs bedroom window and would yell down to my dad who was reading the paper in the living room, "...she got my message okay!".

Next day, the neighbor's reply to my mom would arrive in our mailbox... 馃摣

@SandWitch did your families ever knock on each other's doors? 馃ぃ

No, not really! The thing with farming is that everyone was always way too busy to stop in and visit! Most of the non-postage paid notes that went back and forth were deposited at night after dark, which was when everyone had a free moment but didn't want to disturb anyone's precious peaceful time!

@Lilnonames My grandma was on a party line. I could hear other people pick up and listen in for a while.
