Were the 1980's really all that special?

God yes, the 1980's were CRAP! I'm glad that awful time is in the past now.
Noooooooooooooooooo.... but I was young back then, and I had FUN. That's all that matters.

I'm asking for a couple of reasons.
Firstly, because I wasn't there to experience it, but also because of what I actually do know about that decade (and it's not pretty).
I'll often come across comments about how great the music was, or the films, but I'm not interested in that trivial nonsense. What about the politics, the state of the world, how people actually treated each other back then? As I understand it, in many respects things were far worse than they are now.
For example, it was the decade of GREED, "yuppies", Gordon Gekko, the crash of 1987, and how so many were so materialistic, shallow and crass. Reaganomics, LOL 😂 🤣 Thatcher! 🤮 Gorbachev! 🤪
In my own country we had a Labour government - Hawke.
Then of course there was AIDS. Let's see if I can remember what it stands for. Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome? Yes, I think that's it. Is it true that nothing, absolutely nothing, was done to prevent its spread in the U.S., because the president of the time (Reagan) was a senile old ultra-conservative who believed that it was sent by God to kill gays? You know, for their "sins", like in Sodom and Gomorrah.
Then there was the Chernobyl disaster (1986), the Iran-Contra scandal (1987), the Iran-Iraq War, Saddam Hussein's use of chemical weapons that were provided to him by the U.S., the Falklands War.
