PERDIO 'CONTINENTAL' 1959-1960, three-band portable

A transistor set - though the case is big enough to accommodate valves. This is really a two-band set - the third band is a marginally-useful 'trawler' band and I can't actually get anything out of it. It has 2*4.5 volt inputs (I converted it to run on 'C' size) and germanium transistors. It's only really a few years into the 'transistor' age. Sound is fairly good but surprisingly light on bass compared to the Hacker Sovereign, which is similar in size - and also to the Defiant A55, which is actually smaller! This set has a thin plywood case and a cloth front, and a tuning dial rather than a cursor. 'Perdio' was a portmanteau of 'Personal radio'. The brand only existed for around ten years.
I think the trawler (marine band in the States) band was largely discontinued and replaced with VHF systems back in the 1960’s

@stratosranger Both short and medium wave are a lot less busy than they were forty or fifty years ago. The BBC still read out a 'shipping forecast' on long wave, but the fact is, the people in the boats don't need it. They get everything they need through the internet. The 'shipping forecast' is for the benefit of the landlubbers. Time to make the cocoa 🙂
@supersnipe Ahhh. OK

What's it good for other than dust collection?
