DEFIANT A55 1961-ca.1965

This is a two-band portable radio with a wooden case (a regular thing in those days), cloth finish, and a nice old-fashioned look to it. It still works and performs very well. My service literature gives the release date as June, 1961, when the set cost GBP 12.13s.7d. (GBP 13.68, or around GBP 250 in modern money).

And the name? There used to be a thing in the UK called 'resale price maintenance'. That meant that retailers couldn't offer discounts. The 'co-op' (Royal Arsenal Co-Operative Society, or RACS) had a system of offering dividend stamps which qualified as a 'discount'. The radio manufacturers didn't like this, and refused to sell their radios, etc. through the Co-Op's chain of shops. So the Co-Op decided it would sell its own sets (hence 'Defiant'). Resale Price Maintenance was abolished for most things in 1964 and so 'Defiant' lost its raison d'etre.

Long wave and medium wave; no FM.
I'd assume it's based on semiconductors?
Any idea how many transistors it has?

@helenS If I recall correctly, they started out with six transistors but a re-design took it down to five. It originally had a 9V battery but with a strange plug on it because it had a tap at 4.5V. A battery holder for AA cells has replaced this, again with a tap at 4.5V. I'm not an engineer so I don't understand the exact reasons for this but it was to do with the technical limitations of the time.

@supersnipe Thank you very much for those valuable informations! 🌷
(I made my own AM radio when I was, like, 15 or so, and I still have it. 200mW output power! It also needs a 9V "transistor" battery.)

@helenS A 'PP3' no doubt! They are still widely available, but I presume most of them end up in smoke alarms these days. You can still get the big PP9. The smaller PP7 is hard to get. I have a set (an Ever Ready...future post 🙂) which took them, but found a battery pack of the same size which takes AA (U7), so that solved that problem!

@supersnipe Yes, PP3 size! Of course, you can always use 6xAAA for a self-made audion.

@supersnipe PS I joined the "Appreciating Old Things That Still Work" group 😇
