The pros and cons of obsession
Obsession is good when it's focal point is not another living person who you are able to have interaction with. In my past, I've tasted the bitter fruit of the wrong kind of obsession and even lately, let me talk about that a bit.
So I'm a big fan of certain booktubers, but when i focus on certain points of view they have and how those cannot mesh with my own manner of being, it can be a thing i'm gonna think obsessively about. One of them says not to read too fast, and his point is sound, that if you're just knocking them off without tasting them, it's quite pointless, and isn't suited for great works of literature. For me however what is fast is for others probably pretty slow. There are other ways i modify, as in having much in the mix so each work goes more slowly. It should be noted here as all my posts are a big progressive account, that War and Peace will not be finished in a fortnight. Tonight i've dipped into some that were in the process of being read a little whiles ago, and gosh it feels good, Vollmann for instance is like finding an oasis in a desert after much time in the hands of the holy scribblers.
The limit to how many can be in the mix is limitless, and the wide all encompassing approach i favor quite a bit, as opposed to a minimal amount which is supposed to intensify comprehension of each text, that is beside the point for me, i determine myself that EVERYTHING i choose to read is a part of a whole, and the only way to get a grasp of it is to be in many parts of it at a time.
This is obsession which is to me good, obsession with the printed word, and there ought to be even further expansion. I recall a teacher i had who tried to teach me writing skills, she had me read news articles. When's the last time i did that??!! MONTHS ago and in a silly sarcastic manner, i should therefore set apart some time not everyday but somewhat regularly to read something online, be it news or on a topic or personage of interest, and maybe follow it up with something that catches my eye while reading it, there's always other things websites are trying to get you to spend time on.
And writing my own ineffectual musings here aids the overall process from being in a state of ignorance, to a state where one can use one's capacities, to let things sink in is the idea, and whatever helps helps.
But i insist that error is in my DNA, the right way to me is something i could never do, it's like the prospect of sleeping on a floor with nothing soft, or spending more than an hour in a no smoking area for a chain smoker. Or for me having a firm schedule that is the same time each day, the approach must be tailor made and not some well intentioned approach applied to the masses.
