Mother fatally shot 'at point-blank range' while pushing baby in pram in New York City | US News

New York City Mayor Eric Adams said the incident shows how a "national problem is impacting families". Police have released details about the suspect, who is said to have run away from the scene immediately after shooting the woman at "very close range".

A mother has died after being shot in the head while pushing her three-month-old baby in a pram in New York City.

The 20-year-old was approached by a stranger who "fired a single shot" into her head from "very close range", New York Police commissioner Keechant Sewell said.

Officers were called to the Upper East Side of Manhattan just after 8.20pm on Wednesday, where the woman was found unconscious.

She was taken to Metropolitan Hospital by emergency services, but died less than an hour later.

The baby was not hurt, police said, but was taken to hospital to be checked over.

The suspect, who has been described as male and wearing all black, ran away from the scene, near the junction of Lexington Avenue and East 95th Street, immediately after the shooting.

No arrests have been made yet.

The city's mayor, Eric Adams, last week condemned an "appalling" Supreme Court ruling which is expected to allow more people to legally carry firearms in some of America's biggest cities.

Just weeks after massacres at a Texas school and a Buffalo supermarket, leading to calls for tighter gun control, the court ruled that the Constitution gives people the right to carry a firearm outside their home.

'No fear' in using guns on innocents

Mr Adams said the latest incident showed people had "no fear in using these guns on innocent New Yorkers".

"This entire day, we have been addressing the problem of the over-proliferation of guns on our street, how readily accessible they are," he said.

"These are real stories, real lives," he added.

"When a mother is pushing a baby carriage down the block or an individual woman is pushing the baby carriage down the block and is shot at point-blank range, it shows just how this national problem is impacting families."

An investigation into the shooting is ongoing.

@ozgirl512 Sometimes judges kill people, you know that man above who shot a woman in front of a child. Do you now what he was out on bond for, aggravated assault of a woman in front of a child. Nothing will be done about that though.

Yea if people are allowed to carry guns then one of these shooters might be shot, we can't have that, would create an unsafe environment for criminals.

@Spunkylama The real problem with gun violence is not that people are allowed to have gun but this:

What is wrong with these people that get disrespected by mayo. The suspect, 36-year-old Melvin Williams, was out on bond at the time of the shooting and was prohibited from possessing a gun as a convicted felon. Williams has been booked in Fulton County Jail at least eight different times. Not allowed to have a gun but allowed to be our among us because of liberal criminal justice policies brought to by groups like BLM.

@Johnson212 You mean it was possible because some idiot judge let him out on bond.

@Spunkylama It is more than just some judge, it is bail reform, district attorneys soft on crime, police chief who who is afraid of BLM.
