So, where is the "winning" today?

In the last week the President of the United States has been schooled in how to lose a trade war, been found wordless on gun control, watched North Korea launch missiles an not seen anything wrong with that and been called out on inciting mentally unstable people to violence while backing away from the easy win of condemning White Supremacy. So whats he going to do about it??
Order the rounding up of 700 illegal immigrants, working in chicken processing plants in Mississippi. Way to distract the crowd. The local authorities (and these are Southerners) have been at great pains to point out that this was not requested by State powers. This came down from "the highest level" in Washingon. And boy that guy looked annoyed. Half a dozen chicken processing plants just lost their workforce.
Now I dont approve of the illegal immigrant workforce thing that America is so fond of. But the way of dealing with an ingrown toenail is NOT to chop off your foot.

Truth. It’s ironic that there would even be so many undocumented workers in what is a traditionally very conservative part of the country. These are generally Trump supporters, so how’s that working out for them, I wonder ? 🤔

@bijouxbroussard shhhh.......secrets.
whowasthatmaskedman · 70-79, M
@Carla This is the thing. Everyone knows where the illegals are. They always have. They are cheap labour doing jobs no one else wants. Thats an open secret. But Trump needed a headline that didnt point to something that reflected badly on him. And hes running out of subjects.
DeWayfarer · 61-69, M
@bijouxbroussard Especially since the state didn't call for it.
Carla · 61-69, F
@whowasthatmaskedman i know why he did it. I just dont know how he thinks it plays well. I know his "base" eats it up, but he certainly isnt building up that base.

There are undocumented workers all over the south. Everywhere.
My shhhhh.....was facetious. The good baptists down there have many of those open secrets.
@Carla To illustrate how clueless many Trump supporters are, there was a story last year about a veteran whose wife was undocumented and had been here for several years. The veteran was a rabid Trump supporter, but when ICE came for his wife, he was trying to get Trump to intervene ! Everyone was saying how sad it was that the family would be split up, but this was what Trump had promised to do ! I wondered, why did this fellow think his family would be spared ? Maybe because he was a veteran ? In any case, the wife and mother of his children was sent back to Guatemala. 🙁
Carla · 61-69, F
@bijouxbroussard that is a sad story.
I think there are many of them.
What did he say that made all of his followers ignore what he says? That is a very circular question.
whowasthatmaskedman · 70-79, M
@Carla This is where I think he has made a tactical error. He is gradually reducing his own base a few at a time and not adding anything to it. And those numbers will serve him well to keep him as the Republican nominee. But will not stand against a motivated pro Democrat/anti Trump vote.
DeWayfarer · 61-69, M
@Carla I don't believe it's so much what he said rather what he stood for. They wanted change for the "good old days" so badly that they didn't consider just what that change would entail.

@bijouxbroussard
Truth. It’s ironic that there would even be so many undocumented workers in what is a traditionally very conservative part of the country. These are generally Trump supporters, so how’s that working out for them, I wonder ?
Truth, is that the districts in California, Oregon and Washington State, that elect GOP House members, are where the bulk of the illegal immigrants exist in those states.
DeWayfarer · 61-69, M
@Northwest Then why are they so worried about Mississippi?
Northwest · M
@DeWayfarer I'm afraid I don't understand what you mean here.
@Northwest Maybe I’m misunderstanding you, we know that a majority of undocumented are in those West Coast states. Those are also blue states, all have Democratic governors and there are several “sanctuary cities” here. But the OP was speaking of the ICE raid in Mississippi and that state isn’t even close to blue. So I expressed surprise that there were so many undocumented there.
DeWayfarer · 61-69, M
@Northwest Could it possibly be their figures are all wrong?
Northwest · M
@bijouxbroussard What I'm saying, is that it seems as if even in Blue State, where you have Red spots, it seems as if employers look the other way, when it comes to illegal immigrants, and the same goes for the population at large, even though they're sending GOP'ers to Congress.

So, it's no big surprise, that in Red States, you will find the same pattern. What's going to happen when they hit up chicken processing plants in Arkansas?
DeWayfarer · 61-69, M
@Northwest And that comes to my point. Are they worried about their own figures.

Why I asked this:

A) 45 wants immigration status on the census.

B ) perhaps they won't be so hard on other states until they know for certain.
Northwest · M
@DeWayfarer It's all theatrics. 45 is a racist, and would prefer not to have illegal immigrants, but he, and those like him, do not mind having them as the "help". They, however, need to show the rednecks they're doing something. Hate is all they have for 2020. It's not like they're bringing back those coal mining jobs, or selling more agricultural products to China.
@Northwest No...you are correct in that there are red areas in blue states. But the point is, in the blue states, people are fighting Trump to keep people from being deported so that the people can have better lives. In the red areas some of those groups are fighting sanctuary cities (which I don’t love, but not for racist reasons). Mississippi is one of the states that is happy when Trump sends ICE into our states. So the fact that they have a significant number of undocumented workers (when they have so many poor whites and blacks receiving assistance) is rather hypocritical, really.

@bijouxbroussard They want free labor. Slavery is now illegal. This is the next best thing.
@SmartKat An excellent point.
Northwest · M
@SmartKat
They want free labor. Slavery is now illegal. This is the next best thing.
Agree, this is the point I was trying to make.
It's all theatrics. 45 is a racist, and would prefer not to have illegal immigrants, but he, and those like him, do not mind having them as the "help".
Carla · 61-69, F
@Northwest i dont think any of us wish to believe that. But....we know.
Northwest · M
@Carla You would think we're evolving in the correct direction, but then we go through 75 years or so, without a world war, and then Trump and Brexit happen...
Carla · 61-69, F
@Northwest without a cause to bind us, we struggle. I would have thought after all of 45s crap, his cult would have turned on him. I fear we are much closer to the edge than we should allow ourselves to be.

Waiting for a little round, yellow, laughing face from eli.
Northwest · M
@Carla Theres's an Eli who blocked me, because he got tired of not having a logical response to my comments :-)

45 is the physical manifestation of the crowd that brought him to power, so I hold no hope in them changing. My hope is that the rest of us show up and vote in 2020. It's not only about the office of the Presidency, it's about the courts, and other institutions, he's infesting with his hatred.

In behind the scenes messages, he's sending to the NRA, he reminded them that he appointed two pro-NRA Supremes....
Carla · 61-69, F
@Northwest yes, it is mitch's mission to push as many far right minded, unqualified judges through as he can before his power is stripped. We all know that he isnt bringing and legislation to the floor, be it bi partisan or no. That way they can cmplain that congress isnt doing their job.
It will take years to right this ship after four years.
I certainly hope that people get out next november to save us from another four.
