In June 2024, a group of over 100 Israeli victims of the October 7th attack and their families filed a lawsuit in the U.S. Federal Court for the Southern District of New York against UNRWA and several of its officials. The suit alleged that UNRWA indirectly aided Hamas when UNRWA employees diverted their salaries to Hamas. The suit demands $1B in compensation.

The US temporarily paused funding, resuming later in 2024 when US intelligence agencies did not find a smoking gun.
