This $7.1-billion-dollar deal, completed in 2013, remains the largest purchase of an American firm by a Chinese company.

Motorola Mobility Motorola was an early leader in the telecommunications space, dating back to 1928. As mobile devices began to dominate the industry, it spun its handset division off into the independent Motorola Mobility, which was bought by Google in 2012. Made In China?

L.L.Bean, Levi Strauss & Co. Black and decker, Colman ( the camp gear outfit)
Radio Flyer
The red wagon helped make Radio Flyer one of the most iconic American brands. However, this beloved children’s toy is not made in the Chicago plant anymore. The famous red wagon has been a product of China since 2004,

Brach’s Confections, Inc.
Famous for its caramels, Brach’s Confections has been a staple of American candy jars for more than 100 years. Although “America’s candy maker” graces the bag, in actuality some of these treats come from abroad.

American Girl Dolls
In retail stores across the country and boasting the word “American” in its name, American Girl seems like a company that would manufacture its famed dolls in the U.S. In actuality, these dolls are made in China, like many other products by parent company Mattel.

Ray Ban
Nothing looks more American than the perfect pair of Ray-Ban sunglasses?

Hush Puppies

@SatyrService For the life of me I can't even understand why it is legal for a Chinese company to own US property.
@MethDozer Cui Bono?

Follow the money,
MethDozer · M
@SatyrService should be illegal for non citizens to own infrastructure and land. Just out of a strategic point but also from a public pricing point.
Burnley123 · 41-45, M
China is communist only in an (increasingly tenuous) aesthetic sense. There is no way that it's economy could be described as communist in any way.
@Burnley123 yes.. and it has never been communist so much as putting a communist mask on and imperial authoritarian system
BlueVeins · 22-25
Fight Communism by boycotting privately-owned businesses.

🤔
Elessar · 26-30, M
You won't find much, aside from niche products at most, or exclusive, expensive (actually , real price) alternatives. Our consumerist/capitalist society (just like every other economic system before it) requires slavery in order to function, and China just happens to provide that. If you want to get rid of it, prepare to become yourself the new China.

(And I'm not a fan of it, just stating the hard inconvenient truth nobody seems to want to acknowledge)
@Elessar indeed, I agree
Graylight · 51-55, F
'Muricans want cheap, they demand easy and quick. They want more for less. They refuse to fall victim to the economy, to be scammed by unscrupulous merchants out to fleece them.

In standing against communism, they're biting the hand that feeds them. And remember, if China has bought much of the US, then it's only because the US was for sale.
@Graylight indeed, Communist china has been Buying America, Un stopped I will post a list soon
Richard65 · M
Watch American Factory on Netflix if you want an idea of how China will treat everyone after they've achieved global economic dominance. It ain't pretty. I remember reading about a baseball player in the USA and a soccer player in the UK who tweeted some pro-Taiwan stuff. China demanded the clubs discipline the players or remove the tweets and threatened to block television coverage of their games in China, cutting off media revenue. The Chinese authorities want to police your thoughts.
@Richard65 I will look aaat that thanks
SW-User
Yeah it's real communist of American corporations to outsource to China 🙄

SW be like: Capitalism is communism 🤡
@SW-User elaborate?
spjennifer · 56-60, T
It's interesting that it was the Capitalists who outsourced most of our manufacturing to China in order to make more money and avoid paying Union wages isn't it? China is now no more "Communist" than we are, yes they have a different political system than we do but they also have an open market economy that our Capitalist 💵 financed.
@spjennifer so very on target
funny too how for s many, the word communist just means
something i hate!
spjennifer · 56-60, T
@SatyrService Well, that's what they've been taught to believe, "Communism, Socialism = bad" "Capitalism, wage slavery = good". And these ideologies have mostly been propagated by the wealthy Capitalists who will seek to get richer no matter who's in charge...
@spjennifer yes indeed you got that right
I like the sentiment, but you're right...it's not easy.
SatanBurger · 36-40, F
I literally couldn't stop supporting them even if I wanted to, their foods are too good. Oyster sauce, fish sauce, soy sauce, mirin, other chinese cooking wines, fermented black bean sauce... they got the holy trinity of umami in that country 🥴

I'm sorry, blame the umami for takeover of communism in the future 😶
@SatanBurger the food is fine! I encourage better restaurants
but it is the cheap stuff, dollar stor4es and wallmart that fill the pockets n the PRC
SatanBurger · 36-40, F
@SatyrService I guess that's fair.
Dave1955 · 61-69, M
@SatanBurger Join the Red Umami 😀
beckyromero · 36-40, F
To do that, you first need to repeal PNTR.

I'm all for that.
@beckyromero tell me about PNTR
that sounds very interesting
beckyromero · 36-40, F
@SatyrService

Congress passed, and President Clinton signed, legislation in 2020 establishing permanent normal trade relations with China.

Prior to that law, annual reviews were required (and China was granted normal trade relations every year since 1980).

In 1985, our trade deficit with China was about $6 million. In 2022, it was over $382 BILLION. (figures from the US Bureau of the Census)

Clearly PNTR has done nothing to improve our trade balance with China, nor has it done anything to improve human rights conditions in China.

I supported Dick Gephardt for president in 2004. Part of my decision was that he was opposed to granting China PNTR.
@beckyromero I remebber Dick Gephardt
and yes thanks I di go look it up
other clinton stupidity?
he signed the repal of theThe Glass-Steagall Act separated commercial and investment banking activities, which were previously conducted by the same institutions . The act aimed to prevent banks from taking excessive risks with depositors’ money and to protect consumers from the consequences of bank failures . The act was repealed in 1999

this has resulted in numerous back disasters, including the big one of 2010
it ALSO made it possible, for comnmerceaul banks to take over or buy
consumer banks,
we see how well that worked

There's nothing communist about China.
Wealth is privately owned, there is wage labour and the means of production aren't owned by the community.

@MarmeeMarch No, no, you don't get to backtrack, you blame "Communist China" for manufacturing most of the products we buy. Wrong, China has just as many if not lots more ( by population) competent Engineers capable of designing those products. Thanks to tRump, many of those huge Corporations pay very little taxes and their Local offices are nothing more than receiving dumps for products made in China so don't have many employees... The "root of the greed" is with the owners of the Corporations who moved manufacturing offshore to avoid Union wages and the benefits they had to pay for here.
