Capitalism was a response to feudalism, and gave a small group of traders some space to accumulate wealth.

It was never designed to benefit the masses, and because of that, it was never going to do it by accident.
This is precisely why and how socialism was theorised.

Not wrong. Propaganda during periods like the French Revolution claimed it would liberate the masses to gin up support for the merchant class. What resulted is the merchant class just replaced the gentry and eventually royalty and the church too.
