People confuse capitalism with democracy or even free enterprise as if all the values of these things are, in fact, capitalism. So if capitalism is criticised people think you are advocating for Soviet Union.

The rot really set in within when corporations were given rights similar to citizens, but as wealthy megalith citizens, without values, who can distort democracy, influence (both buy and put their people into committees to get the outcome they want) government decisions, exploit human labour and the resources of a country with zero commitment back to that country (except for purposes of PR. Yes, run big budget ads showing how you're everybody's friend and friend to the earth.)

@Abstraction My ideal society (which will probably never happen) would have a market economy but without private ownership; a strong democratic state and worker-cooperative businesses.

Joking aside, I do see mid 20th century social democracy as being tangibly better. I'm just not sure how we can back to that and have it sustainable given the current power dynamics in society. In addition: Keynesianism is based on demand, which is based on consumption and consumption is killing the planet.

So I'll take a lesser-evil but it's still a lesser-evil.
