what does being a "liberal" really meant?

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Liberalism

here's a wiki, but has its lost its true meaning in today's society? why silence freedom of speech when its about speaking one's mind?

Its really about the two parties and mindsets here in the US being so polarized. Its fine if what exactly a conservative and what a liberal means changes. Society changes, so it makes sense these terms change.

However when you can't come together in the middle, when your two parties just seem to want the exetremes, then you aren't going to make much progress.

@Pherick: "when two parties just want the extremes..." https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Horseshoe_theory

@nurseVneck: I certainly understand the idea, just not sure how well I see it working in practice. I mean if we made lists of what the extreme right and the extreme right want, I can't imagine them being closer to what the middle wants?
