Why is Melania Trump so involved?

From footage of the G7 summit, all of the politicians are undertaking their official duties without their spouses (as most people do at their workplace). It's conspicuous that Melania Trump is almost ever-present. What is her role?

She's the first lady.

@USAalltheway: Why would America need that role when none of the other countries appear to? Should the rest of the world bring their husbands and wives too?
USAalltheway · 31-35, M
American Exceptionalism.

@USAalltheway: But what is she actually adding? If it was something positive, wouldn't everybody else be doing it?
USAalltheway · 31-35, M
She's showing loyalty to Trump. None of the other world leaders are so deserving of loyalty.
GlassDog · 41-45, M
@USAalltheway: That's amazing! All other countries leaders must be very ashamed to not being born in America. Maybe American people should become leaders of all world nations and educate them in your ways.
USAalltheway · 31-35, M
Or maybe we should just conquer them and make them all part of America so the globalists can't take them over.
GlassDog · 41-45, M
@USAalltheway: Wouldn't making them all the same country be a bit like... globalisation?
USAalltheway · 31-35, M
No. It would be nationalism.
GlassDog · 41-45, M
@USAalltheway: You can't really have nationalism if there aren't any other nations.
USAalltheway · 31-35, M
You can if the nation is America.
GlassDog · 41-45, M
@USAalltheway: Is that the exceptionalism again? Things are false in general, but you can ignore that and say it's true if the country is America?
USAalltheway · 31-35, M
In some cases yes.
GlassDog · 41-45, M
@USAalltheway: I'm learning many things today. Is there a rule about when you reverse a truth and when not?
USAalltheway · 31-35, M
The rule is to use common sense.
GlassDog · 41-45, M
@USAalltheway: What if it's in short supply?
USAalltheway · 31-35, M
When in doubt, ask an ordinary American.
GlassDog · 41-45, M
@USAalltheway: Even though Americans are only a few percent of the world's population and therefore, by definition, not common?
USAalltheway · 31-35, M
Of course we Americans aren't common. We're exceptional.
GlassDog · 41-45, M
@USAalltheway: Well, thank you for this insight. It's also very heartening that you will allow everyone to be American. It's time to drop the borders!
USAalltheway · 31-35, M
No that's globalism. Nationalism is completely different.

@GlassDog: Everyone did bring their spouse, except I can;t say I saw Uk hubby with the other wives.
katielass · F
@USAalltheway: shut up you don't know what you're talking about.
GlassDog · 41-45, M
@katielass: I'm surprised nobody pointed that out earlier. After I posted (it was a genuine question, by the way, rather than a dig), I found images of the Trumps greeting Macron and wife. When I looked back, most of the times I'd seen Melania was at social events, which makes sense. There was one event where she looked quite out of place, which is what prompted this. Does the First Lady have any part of the role which is political?
katielass · F
@GlassDog: could be no one saw all that I've seen because most people work. I don't so I see a lot. At any rate, in answer to your question, no our first lady has no official political role. She is hostess of all WH functions of course. We have had a first lady before who thought she was co-president and of curse it was nothing but scandals. Usually our first lady works on a cause that means something to her. First Lady Laura Bush, probably the most impressive first lady since Jackie Kennedy, worked on getting kids interested in reading and women's rights around the world. Michelle Obama's cause was obesity. Unfortunately, she took the wrong approach and tried to force kids to eat healthy instead of opening their minds to it. $millions worth of food was thrown away each week because kids wouldn't eat it. It's a good cause and worth trying again but with a different approach.
USAalltheway · 31-35, M
@katielass: Actually, I always know what I'm talking about because I have common sense. You seem like the one who doesn't know what you're talking about because you're a liberal.
