Knowing full well in advance the expected media wrath why did President Trump summarily terminate Director Comey nonetheless?

He cannot control his impulses. He was upset at several things that Comey said during his recent Senate testimony, and the fact that Comey wouldn't give his staff a preview. Trump considers this disloyal, which apparently is the worse crime someone can commit in Trump's eyes. And then there is the investigation which is ongoing that Trump wants to stop. He simply miscalculated the blowback.

The investigation will intensify as Trump knew it would. Personally I think loyalty is a good quality. Is t an FBI Director supposed to operate soberly behind the scenes and not justifiably earn the monicker "Showboat"?

Yes, the Director is supposed to operate behind the scenes. Comey was right not to bring up the Trump investigation during the election. He was wrong to bring up Clinton's.

The showboat moniker is laughable coming from the biggest showboat we've seen in politics in a long time.
