It's already kind of happening, but less visibly. All these rebel factions, insurgents, and terrorists groups in the middle east and north africa? Many of them have big backers. Saudi Arabia, Iran, Turkey, Egypt, Russia, France, Britain, and the US. All these nations, and probably others, are throwing support behind various groups in the region.
Why? Because when the dust settles, they want their voice to carry weight in the reformation of the middle east. The Suez canal and all that oil are still exceptionally valuable and global strategic objectives.
