Help please: What is a 'liberal' in US politics? Democrat or Republican or something different?

In the U.S., liberalism has stood for social progress, equality and inclusion. Conservativism has supported traditionalists, nationalism, exclusion and preserving the "status quo".
There used to be both liberal and conservative factions in both parties. Republican liberals were abolitionists and those who supported Reconstruction and later, the Civil Rights movement. Southern Democratic conservatives ("Dixiecrats") established the KKK and Jim Crow legislation (enforced racial segregation). There are still liberal, moderate and conservative Democrats, but the 21st century GOP has run off most of its more liberal components.

For a little while, I thought I understood it. It obviously has different colours/factions/sects. Thank you though.
