Help please: What is a 'liberal' in US politics? Democrat or Republican or something different?

It's always been my understanding that "liberal" and "Democrat" went together but that's not always 100% correct.

@Valentine: You're welcome. I understand that the page I provided doesnt exactly give a definition of what a "liberal" is but it does explain it based on topic points.

@Reboot: No, the article is quite clear. Very similar to our Labour and Conservative (aka Tory) parties in many respects.
Liberalism and conservatism are political ideologies. Democrat and Republican are political [b]parties[/b]. People often get them confused.
