Was "fake news" a thing before Trump needed an excuse for why the news about himself and his actions was so unflattering?

Is it just like the introduction of officially condoned "alternative facts" ?

Trump is the greatest purveyor and proponent of fake news around. Just look at how he totally misrepresented what Comey said yesterday in his tweets during the hearings. In Trump , the Russians have found the perfect way to undermine western democracy , and they don't even really have to try. This clown sucks up any old nonsense that confirms his bias and presents it as fact.
