Was "fake news" a thing before Trump needed an excuse for why the news about himself and his actions was so unflattering?

Is it just like the introduction of officially condoned "alternative facts" ?

What is fake news? IS it factually inaccurate? Like when it was reported that 3 million more people voted for clinton or that trump's inauguration rally was poorly attended compared to obama's?
Or is it fake news that in fact it was the best attendance ever?
