Anyone that's not American?

What's happening with your politics then? Anything interesting?

I'm Canadian. Major politics events right now are the election of Justin Trudeau (son of a previous PM, sort of a centre-right who comes across as centre-left, and a sexy beast of a man), Truth and Reconciliation with First Nations people (basically coming to terms with the horrible shit we've done to native people over our history), and some political tete-a-tete with Russia.

To be honest, most of our political focus is south of the border. 90% of our economy is tied to the US, and Trump is a major, major change to the US identity. So there's a lot of peeking over the border and whispering fiercely to each other. Because Trump's far right populism was successful, it has a certain popularity in Canada's right and so there's a struggle going on there.

I didn't know you had a truth and reconciliation thing going on, is it basically saying sorry or is there land being talked about? What's the general thinking then in Canada? Mostly right wing/ middle/left. The tête-a-tête with the Russians sounds interesting

They have land, but the integrity of that land is a problem. Resource extraction leads to violations of treaties, or poisoning water sources and destroying the ecology of traditional hunting land. This is coupled with unbelievable, 3rd world poverty and ongoing racism. Most people should be rich if you find a diamond mine on their land - if it's a reserve, the people there will suffer greatly and not see any money from it.

The biggest issue is coming to terms with Residential Schools, which was a decades-long program of taking children from First Nation families, and forcing them into basically white Christian re-education schools that were horrifically abusive - like on-site graveyards abusive. It was an intentional attempt to destroy several cultures and royally messed up a couple of generations.

The Russian thing is NATO posturing. So we moved some troops to Latvia, and now there's some accusations of Russians trying to circulate embarrassing information on anti-Russia politicians. Nothing super major, yet. Don't know where that's leading.

' Stolen children ' as they had in Australia and South Africa, I never would have guessed you had that in Canada. Before anyone jumps in, I'm well aware of British horrific deeds.
