Trump: I ‘should have won’ Nobel Peace Prize, award is ‘forever discredited’

President Trump argued Friday that he should have been awarded the Nobel Peace Prize over this year’s Nobel laureate, former International Criminal Court (ICC) judge Navi Pillay.
The president, who has long coveted the honor, was gifted the award by last year’s recipient, Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado.
In a late evening Truth Social post after his rally in Syracuse, N.Y., Trump repeated his exaggerated claim that he has “settled eight Wars,” and said he was “about to settle, or win, two more” in Iran and the war between Russia and Ukraine.
“The United States of America, represented by me, as your President, should have received the Nobel Peace Prize, but didn’t,” he wrote.
“This is an indelible stain on Norway, one that will never be forgotten,” Trump continued. “The Nobel “Peace” Prize has been forever discredited by a handful of Radical Ideologues who are Anti-Democracy, and Enemies of Civilization!”
In addition to her time on the ICC, Pillay served as a United Nations high commissioner for human rights and was the first non-white woman in South Africa to establish her own law practice.
She recently chaired a UN commission that concluded Israel had committed genocide in Gaza, eliciting strong pushback from the Israeli government.
Trump claimed Pillay “very obviously, hates Israel” in his Friday post, and questioned her qualifications for this award.
“The Nobel Prize was given today to a liberal person who works at the United Nations, who nobody has ever heard of,” he wrote. “In all of the Wars that I have settled, I never spoke to the United Nations—they were of no help.”
In a video shared online of the moment Pillay learned she was the recipient of this year’s Nobel Peace Prize, the international jurist joked that she “may share this prize with Trump.”
After Machado presented Trump with her award last year, the Norwegian Nobel Committee, which selects each year’s peace prize recipient, stressed that the prize was not officially transferred to the president.
“The medal and the diploma are the physical symbols confirming that an individual or organisation has been awarded the Nobel Peace Prize,” the committee said in a statement at the time. “The prize itself — the honour and recognition — remains inseparably linked to the person or organisation designated as the laureate by the Norwegian Nobel Committee.”
