Rove says if Paxton doesn’t debate Talarico, ‘he loses’

The Hill reports:

By Mira Bhakta

Republican strategist Karl Rove said he believes Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton (R) will lose his bid for Senate if he does not agree to a debate with his Democratic opponent, state Rep. James Talarico.

“If he doesn’t debate, I think he loses,” Rove said in a Wednesday appearance at The Economic Club of Chicago alongside Democratic strategist David Axelrod. “If he debates, the question is, is he going to be able to go on the offense?”

Axelrod weighed in on Rove’s assertion, saying, “There’s a reason he hasn’t debated in 16 years. He’s not adroit.”

The “You don’t need to be adroit in this,” Rove, a former top White House aide to the George W. Bush administration, responded. “The question is, does he have the guts to do it?”

The Republican strategist continued, “Because he goes into the debate and says, ‘You can say all those negative things about me … but I was cleared by the state Senate but I understand why you want to talk about that cause you don’t talk about [other issues].'”

Rove’s comment on the “negative things” Talarico would say about Paxton in a hypothetical debate was a reference to the Texas attorney general’s 2023 impeachment. State representatives voted to indict Paxton on corruption charges, but he was later acquitted in the Texas Senate.

“I don’t know if he’s got the political moxie to say, ‘My future depends on me getting into a debate and coming out the winner,’” Rove concluded.

Talarico has repeatedly bashed Paxton for not appearing in debates with him — notably challenging his Republican opponent to a Fox News debate during an interview last week on CBS.

Despite President Trump carrying the Lone Star State in each of his presidential bids, Paxton trailed Talarico by 2 points in a September Fox News poll. The Democrat’s lead was within the survey’s 3-point margin of error.

The poll found an even wider gap in likely voters’ favorability ratings of the two candidates, with Talarico earning an 8-point net positive rating, while Paxton came in at 18 points underwater.

The president also called Paxton, whom he has endorsed, “a pain in the a—” during his stops this week in Texas and Oklahoma, acknowledging the Lone Star State’s attorney general is “a little controversial.” Though he added that the GOP Senate candidate “was at my side more than anybody” when he “was being hit by the radical left very hard.”

Trump’s visit to Texas came shortly after The New York Times obtained an audio clip in which Paxton said the president’s GOP midterm convention in Dallas “dropped our numbers.” A senior Paxton adviser called the report “manipulated nonsense.”

During the midterm convention, the president said he doesn’t “like the way Ken [Paxton] dresses,” “talks” or “looks” but called the Senate hopeful “the greatest” attorney general in the country.

My comments:

Well, Rove is half right—if Paxton doesn’t debate Rep. Talarico then Paxton loses.

However, if Paxton does debate Talarico then Paxton will get slaughtered! James is a Master Class debater; Paxton is a weak person, amoral, and a criminal using his office to avoid indictments and crossing his fingers that he can remain in office until the Statute of Limitations runs out…

Classic Catch-22 for Paxton. Personally I hope he agrees to debate. I want to see James Talarico crush him like a bug.

I love seeing Republicans attack Talarico with religion. Talarico knows his Bible completely and always zings them "chapter and verse."

Gina Hinojosa has been taunting Abbott. "He isn't man enough to debate me.". How can anyone NOT adore her?
@Crazywaterspring …how can anyone NOT abhor Abbott?

@KunsanVeteran I'm not so sure he'll lose if he doesn't debate cos it's smarter not to as how is he going to answer for his record. He can't deny this stuff but you can make things as pretty as possible over text.

Through observation only people are more than willing to suspend belief if you can't see their behavior.

With that said I hope he loses but disagree that he might lose if he doesn't debate
I’m hoping that the Republicans push Paxton into debating Talarico.

It would be a massacre—not that Rep Talarico would be unduly mean. He’ll be his usual compassionate, rational, well-balanced self and he will expose & crush Paxton.

And that video would be equal to Jack Smith & Amy Klobuchar utterly destroying Eric Dumbs*h*i*t* in the recent Senate hearing.

I see a bluff. He accepts the challenge, then pulls out at the last minute with deep regret due to some mystery illness and hopes for sympathy..😷
@whowasthatmaskedman …such would instantly fail

Paxton has let off at least 20 people of r ape and child assault charges. He won't debate because he doesn't want it brought up. He knows he fkked up
@SatanBurger Yes—he knows he is screwed. If he doesn’t debate he loses (and tRUMP ain’t exactly helping him any…)

But if he does debate, James Talarico in his very polite yet forceful manner hammers him with the facts, exposes how Paxton is just trying to avoid felony charges, and makes mince meat out of him.

I hope it’s the second scenario but either one is fine.

I made an additional contribution to Talarico this evening and it won’t be the last!

@KunsanVeteran My ActBlue account has been quite busy. When Rove says the Rs have a Nazi problem it's bad. I suspect Senator Cornyn will be voting for some Ds this time around.
@Crazywaterspring Due to some really questionable changes in campaign contribution laws over the last two years, the Republicans have the Democrats at a huge disadvantage.

That’s why contributing is the second best thing we can do next to voting.

Some large matches are available and are big force multipliers if we take advantage.

Abbott isn't having a debate with Gina H.
That won't stop him from being reelected.

They're flooding the airwaves with attack ads, focusing not on making things better, but hammering home two issues:
Trans-gender, and boys in girl's sports.
