Putin WAS Communist - a KGB liaison officer between the USSR and East Germany - but I'd judge his regime now as very hard-line right-wing, capitalist. Though the difference is perhaps academic, since it boils down to lust for power.

The Kim dynasty IS Communist... Or is it? It runs North Korea by a strange blend of Mediaeval kingly autocracy without the royal trappings, and hard-line Communist theory. It even coined its own term for its principle: "Kimilism".

So on paper, ideologies of polar opposites.

I think Donald Trump's odd relationship with both Vladimir Putin and Kim Il-Jung is based less on political theory than on admiring "strong" leaders who rule more by personality than system.

Although he was fawning over the People's Republic of China, which is certainly far more rigid system than personality cult. (Her President-for-life is still really a caretaker for the time being of a system designed for indefinitely-long future uniformity.)
