She was an enslaved American clamoring for the day when she could someday be free.
Managing to escape the chains of slavery, she saw an opportunity to help members of her family escape North to freedom. This opened an opportunity for her to help more people flee towards the hope of freedom. She dedicated many years leading this cause and helping many Americans achieve their dream with the help of many like-minded patriots like John Brown.
As the confederacy began to secede another opportunity arose. She joined up with the Union Army!
First as a cook, then as a nurse. She eventually began to see combat as a scout. Her leadership in the raid at Combahee Ferry led to the rescue and freedom of 700 Americans! This makes her the first woman in America to lead a military operation.
She is credited as being not only a fighter for American freedom, but also a hero and a patriot!
