No Flying Cars

Three in the morning. Empty building, dead quiet, just me and the hum of the vending machine. Phone in my hand because what else. And the screen is feeding me the end of the world.

A guy in a mask, half white half black, tells me he knows what's coming. After a certain year there's no way back, he says. Cut from an interview, apparently. He went silent when they asked him why. And I feel it, that cold thing crawling up my spine, even though I know it's garbage. That's the part that gets me. I know, and it still lands.

This is cyberpunk. Not the one they promised us. No flying cars, no neon skyline, no chrome arm. Just this. A tired guy on a night shift, staring into a black rectangle that knows exactly which fear to hand him next. The dystopia showed up. It just looks like a phone at three in the morning instead of a robot with a gun.

We thought the machines would come for our bodies. They came for something cheaper. Your attention. Your sleep. The quiet space in your head where you used to think your own thoughts. Now something fills it for you, one video at a time, and it never runs out and it never sleeps and it knows you better than you'd like to admit.

The man in the mask isn't the villain. He's just a guy who figured out that fear sells better than truth. The real machine is underneath him. The one that decided this exact clip should reach this exact tired man at this exact hour. That's the cold part. Nobody chose it. An algorithm did the math and served me my own dread, and it was right.

And here's the thing nobody in the movies warned us about. The dystopia doesn't feel like a dystopia from the inside. It feels like a slow night and a phone you can't put down. No resistance, no rebellion, no hero. Just one more scroll. You know exactly what it's doing to you. And you keep watching anyway. That was never in the script. That's the part they got wrong. The future doesn't take you by force. You hold it in your hand and you thumb it awake yourself.

it's bad enough already with the shitty drivers all over the roads, I'd hate to imagine them flying around overhead... 🤔
