US Voters Party Affiliation

Gallup says that 27% of American voters currently identify as Democrat and 27% identify as Republican.

It's important to point that out, because MAGAs think that the decline in traditional party membership affected Democrats only.

But that's primarily MAGAs only examine things in the vacuum of their own cult.

The share of independents reached 45% in 2025–2026

How can they come up with these numbers? Only about a third of the states require a person to register for one party or another.

The pollsters are asking if they're committed to a party direction. My state, for instance, does not require party to vote. Our ballots have all candidates listed. You just can't vote for more than one person.

@Northwest okay, that makes sense. My state does require we declare party and only the party you declare shows up. However, there is a "write-in" line and you can write in any candidate regardless of party.
