That was never going to happen. We have people from 3 administrations at this point saying the point was for the US and NATO to keep this war going to the last Ukrainian on the Cold War era fantasy that Russia will magically collapse in 2 weeks.....5 years ago and counting.
Obama promised to close Gitmo and change course on the GWOT and instead we got the Bush foreign policy in black face.
The fact people are gullible enough to believe that the wolf will become a vegetarian after they are elected is on them. And both sides have fallen for that.
