Canadian corporate welfare for EU arms industry announced today to a company with a pretty yikes history.
So Mark Carney just announced they will have Theissan Krupp manufacture 12 submarines for the Canadian Navy. This has been presented as a win for Canadian defense and to show working towards completely arbitrary NATO defense spending targets.
But lets be real. This is corporate welfare for arms dealers in Europe.
First off 12 subs is not a large enough fleet to do literally anything useful.
Second point it will take Theissan Krupp a decade to deliver less than half the total order according to the Carney Government.
Again making them make even less sense.
And the company chosen to build them was definitely a choice. In yet another yikes move in terms of our image as a country they went with a company that was founded and named after an unrepentant nazi Albert Krupp. The man went to his grave a proud nazi and refused to pay reparations (because apparently that was optional in West Germany).
I mean the man was such a villain he was literally the inspiration for Mr. Burns from The Simpsons.
The most infamous photo of Albert Krupp almost didn't happen because Krupp tried to back out when he found out the photographer was Jewish.
This after the same party made a literal Ukrainian nazi SS soldier a national hero, after the Army has expressed concerns about training fascists in Ukraine and after having a government official Cristia Freeland on the Ukraine file for the longest time who is the granddaughter of a nazi propagandist with German military intelligence in Ukraine in WW2 and a supporter of the far right.
And after all of this nobody seems to have even stopped to think "Why do we even want these subs?"
