The $1.7 trillion dilemma - we don’t want any of the following in our community: nuclear, solar or wind farms, fossil fuel plants, data centers . . .

Photo above - Not in my backyard. We have zoning laws against power plants here . . .

$1.7 trillion is the estimated value of all the power plants which generate our electricity. Every American wants more kilowatt hours, and more internet bandwidth. We just don’t want any of the things that make this possible. Not nuclear, not vast acreage of solar or wind farms. Not coal or gas fired electric plants. Gawd dayum . . . folks don’t even want more hydroelectric dams either.

I can hardly blame them. Historically, people also are skittish about living near dairy farms, pig sties, beef feedlots, poultry farms, and mushroom operations (these all have unpleasant smells). Free ranging cattle in the west are disfavored too. Several states are on the verge of outlawing recreational fishing, duck hunting, and deer hunting. Virtually any activity which doesn’t involve Netflix binges and Doordash deliveries could be out of bounds.

Planet Earth has 8.5 billion people. Half of whom live in sub-Saharan Africa, middle east deserts, or hand to mouth villages which are 3 days walk from the nearest airport. Netflix is streaming TV shows like Yellowstone, which makes America look like Montana. Vast green pastures punctuated only by an occasional steer or horse. Clean air and water. Plenty of food on the table.

This is also the reason so many tech and finance bros want to live in locations like Montana. I don’t blame them. Nobody wants to see how sausage is made, or what happens to the leftover parts of a chicken after the wings and nuggets are extracted. (spoiler alert – dog and cat food). Despite what you hear, most residents find living in "New York, New York" a pain in the ass.

I blame Hollywood and democracy – voters like me – for the impulse to rezone neighborhoods against everything that isn't a freshly delivered Dominos pizza or a Montana cattle ranch. We all want to put the bad stuff in someone else’s neighborhood.

I’m just sayin’ . . .

Study shows solar power isn't weak - it's being ruined by fossil fuels

Interesting personally i think the solution is low orbit solar arrays that beam down the collected energy periodically. Earth ought to be preserved for the creatures living on it. Kite power geothermal and tidal power are all in development to help use what we have rather than extract and pollute, which reduces what can be absorbed.
exchrist · 36-40
Solar roofs is least unsightly, geothermal basically invisible what about fat people on stationary bikes?
SusanInFlorida · 31-35, F
@exchrist i have 2 neighbors with solar roofs. one is "old school" - purple panels affect to a normal asphalt tile roof. the other guy replaced his tiles with solar tiles, which look almost identical to legacy roofing. Guess which one is NOT the eyesore?
exchrist · 36-40
@SusanInFlorida I mean I like how solar on roof looks but I bet the solar tiles are less noticable

A kite turbine would solve the problem and scarcely be visible only a few prototypes have been tested but one is still operational on the border of Massachusetts & New York, sometimes visible from I-90 east small scale looks like a bird
SusanInFlorida · 31-35, F
@exchrist i'm concerned about aircraft running into the wire on foggy days, or at night.
exchrist · 36-40
@SusanInFlorida it can easily be declared to airports and county/state governments where such tethers are also the kite is clearly visible so simply don’t fly under it fog is concerning. Night time idk it could have lights on the kite; pretty sure it doesn’t, but Someone’s monitoring the situation.
SusanInFlorida · 31-35, F
@exchrist google "how many airports does america have?" and recognize that most of these serve private, corporate, and agricultural flyers.

Ironically everyone of those people given 1 square yard to stand in would only occupy 1% of the state of Texas. It's not like there's no room. Just keep those data centers out of my state and keep AI away too
SusanInFlorida · 31-35, F
@Gibbon people want to live where their jobs and relatives are. it doesn't matter how much empty land there is in Alaska or death valley if you can't make a living there, and don't know anybody
Gibbon · 70-79, M
@SusanInFlorida I was only making a mental picture of the space the world population takes up. Stop being so damn literal.
SusanInFlorida · 31-35, F
@Gibbon agreed. the world spends too much time thinking of literal/working solutions.

And in the land of unintended consequences, Americas blockage of Iran and the oil sgortage has been a boon to the renewables investmant in the Contruction and industry applications.
