The Amish refuse to use modern toilets – and the people who came after them.

The Amish refuse to use modern toilets. For religious reasons, they use an outhouse. This is all very normal for the Amish family, who are farmers. This practice is part of the commitment to avoid “the lush of the world”: phones, electricity and septic systems.

An Amish man explained: “God knew that man was going to have feces and he made soil to absorb that.” The health department had received what one officer called “a large number of complaints” about the Amish. The department gave them seven days to comply but the Amish refused.

What do you support? Religious persecution or religious freedom?

@hippyjoe1955 The Amish porta potties are not cleaned by specialized service technicians using vacuum trucks to remove waste, followed by a thorough cleaning process. This involves disinfecting the entire interior with sanitizing spray, scrubbing surfaces (seat, tank, walls), pressure washing, and replenishing the holding tank with fresh water, blue deodorizer, and supplies.

Also, the Amish "porta potty" is made of wood and look weathered over the years.

@sree251 I grew up on a farm without running water. We used an outhouse. When the poop got too high we would dig a new hole, move the outhouse and bury the poop. Not a big deal. I worked in bush camps where we had outhouses. Same principle. I might object to the neighbours in the city using an outhouse but a farm????

Apparently, the Amish multiply like rabbits and living too close to the people who went after them. By themselves, on a farm with lots of land, they would not be an issue. Neighbor disputes are an endemic disease in the US.

@sree251 Or it could be nosy neighbours trying to be jerks. It happens.

@hippyjoe1955 The Amish live in family clusters and not organized as church groups that set up farms with large acreage for their members. I can't say for sure but the Amish I run across in farmers' markets are pitch perfect in the way they dress and comport themselves.

@sree251 Being a Mennonite I am well aware of the Amish. I have no problem with anyone's lifestyle so long as they don't unduly impact others who do not share their lifestyle.
