People in North America need to get this through their heads. In Canada it is not so bad but not by much.

funny you mention that...my friend works in that industry and makes well above minimum wage in a union...takes home 400-500 in tips on some shifts...works at a busy place though
@beermeplease A couple things about that. Unions in the restaurant industry are rare unless you are attached to hospitality like a hotel restaurant. And those that are unionized it usually happens after the workplace gets so toxic and dangerous it is about survival. In a year and a bit that I worked in professional kitchens I saw more people maimed from work place accidents than on construction sites and for women disrespect and harassment is the default position. To the point that I have seen people literally read to turn their literal knives on each other.

You could not pay me to go back to working in a "professional" kitchen.

And minimum wage and living wages are not the same thing.

Hell even here in Winnipeg you can be looking at a grand for a bachelor apartment and people going to food banks is skyrocketing every year.
