USS Nimitz Decommissioning Postponed for One Year After Fire on USS Ford.

The scheduled retirement of the USS Nimitz will be delayed, and the Navy’s oldest aircraft carrier will serve about 10 months longer than planned. The Nimitz will remain active through March 2027, the Navy confirmed. It had been scheduled to begin the decommissioning process this year. Breaking Defense first reported the extension.

Extending the Nimitz’s service will allow the Navy to maintain a minimum of 11 active aircraft carriers, as mandated by Congress. The USS John F. Kennedy, the Navy’s next Ford-class aircraft carrier, is scheduled to be delivered and officially commissioned in March 2027.

As many on SW may know, I've been calling for a refueling of the Nimitz's nuclear reactors to allow it to serve another 25-years.

Well, at least this brief life extension means there's another year to keep lobbying for that.

But it shouldn't take a fire in a laundry chute on our newest carrier to make those civilian idiots in the Pentagon realize that we do not have enough aircraft carriers at the moment to handle the many missions they are being given.

@beckyromero Peace is a government responsibility under US law. I'd prefer you folks stick to that law. But I know, there's war, war and war in your repertoire.
Everyone knows your war equipment is the most expensive! Most punishing. Deadliest!

Actually, it is not.

The preamble to the Constitution even calls for providing for the "common defence."

We the People of the United States, in Order to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defence, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America.

It does, however, provide a way for war to be declared. Something Trump (and every president from Truman to the present) have ignored.

The Purposes of the United Nations are:

With their drive to develop nuclear weapons - despite having signed the non-nuclear proliferation treaty - it is Iran that is a threat to peace.

Although I do not like the way Trump is handling this situation, I view the potential of a nuclear-armed Iran as intolerable given their acts of state-sponsored terrorism for the past 47 years.
