Trump before the war: We don't need NATO, they need us!
Trump after the war: HELP US, NATO! PLEASE!

Article 5 has not been and can't be invoked so the allies aren't required to do anything. It's not a war they started or indeed wanted. The UK was still involved in the negotiation for a deal until the war started. Jonathan Powell the UK national security advisor says the last offer before the talks were abandoned was surprising and close to being resolved.
Let's remind about article 5
Key Aspects of Article 5:
Core Principle: It is a mutual defense pact, requiring all NATO allies to assist any member under attack.
Trigger: It applies solely to armed attacks occurring within NATO’s jurisdiction (Europe, North America, North Atlantic, or specifically named territories).
Application: It was invoked for the first and only time in NATO’s history following the 9/11 terror attacks on the United States in 2001.
Flexibility: While it obliges members to respond, each nation determines how it will contribute. The response is not automatically a unified military response.
Actually only NATO member who's sovereign territory has been attacked in this conflict is Turkey and arguably UK via the base on Cyprus.
It's not in the North Atlantic, it's in a gulf off the Indian Ocean so sorry but we've fought wars too often in those areas which haven't really been well conceived and this is I wager is the least well conceived.

@ItsMeMorgue Oh please, think again. It's so entertaining to see. Don't forget your ATS meds.
ItsMeMorgue · 46-50, F
@nudistsueaz I've got a fun idea. For once, I'd like to see one of you Trump cultists actually put together a logical, reasonable argument for why you blindly follow him in spite of all the very real evidence that's been presented to you by the original poster that proves he's lost it?
Bonus points if you can do it without being insulting.

@ItsMeMorgue All you have to look at is the people that were there before him and all their non-accomplishments. Then add the billions of tax dollars they they wasted, and stole.

Nearly 50% of US voters oppose the war. Trump misspoke: the GOP may be facing a very bad future, not NATO.
whowasthatmaskedman · 70-79, M
A very bad future because Trump will pull America out?? Frankly I wouldnt be surprised in most NATO countries wouldnt be glad to see the back of Trump and his BS. And America is going to find itself very alone soon...😷

@whowasthatmaskedman total rubbish

@Platinum You really haven't thought about any of this or looked into the history of international law and international institutions have you?
Hague Convention (1899 - 1907)
Geneva Convention (1864 ; 1929 ; 1949)
Rome Statue (1998)
International Human Rights Law
International Criminal Law
... all thrown under the bus, so you could say "rubbish" with confidence to people online.

Same old same old.
Failing U.S President picks a fight with the foreigner to shield him from close scrutiny at home.
Either about the slump in the economy... or heaven forbid, an official grilling on Epstein which will likely decimate his approval ratings approaching the mid-terms.
Make noise. Appoint like minded loudmouths to get home media off your back by being controversial.
Yada yada yada.
Long established playbook

NATO to Trump:
whowasthatmaskedman · 70-79, M
@Bumbles Yep. Here is Germany's official position:
"Iran war is not a matter for NATO" https://www.abc.net.au/news/2026-03-17/iran-war-europe-hormuz-trump-oil/106462130

This is a good thing, honestly. For too long, America has been like that abusive older brother who beats up on you and gives you noogies, and then justifies it by beating up anybody else who picks on you.

@ItsMeMorgue Perzactly!!😷

Thanks to king donald, americans need to get used to a world where only their friend russia will help them and then only if China - the master of both - gives permission.
The americans are about to ask for that permission from china.

For someone living in some shithole country and not the US you certainly are an expert on US politics and policy. Your stories are always good for a laugh though.🙄🤣🍿
nudistsueaz · 61-69, F
@Waveney Makes me wonder, why did you vote for him???? 🙂
Waveney · 41-45, M
@nudistsueaz vote for whom?
ElwoodBlues · M
China tells tRump "Nope!"

newjaninev2 · 56-60, F
america is now aligned with russia so attacking one of their own allies makes even less sense!
What a mess!

NATO basically exists because the US supports it. Watch what happens when Trump pulls back on the reigns. The slacker Europeans will crap their easter baskets.
