Is Vegas worse than LA for bogus hotel fees?

Photo above - These "Fallout" visitors to Vegas will manage to avoid hotel parking fees, but that dog and the 3rd person in the room are going to cost plenty. Hey guys, pick up the pace and avoid the late check-in fee, too.

World Cup fan alert: Vegas is NOT hosting any 2026 world cup matches. That isn’t stopping SIn City from adding new layers of hotel and resort fees to capitalize on World Cup watch parties and betting, of course.

Front and center example – after checkout a guest (link below) was charged an extra $50 for unplugging some hotel device to charge their laptop. There were no disclosures anywhere in the room agreement – or in the room itself – about this ridiculous scam.

Okay, that’s a one-off. The real pain is those “mandatory fees” which now range from $40 to $65 a night in Las Vegas. The fee is a flat extra charge, at the whim of the hotel operator. You don’t get any extra services or privileges. You just pay a fee. Parking is still extra. Valet service is still extra. Early/late check-in is still extra. Not having a hotel security guy barge in and interrupt your personal time with an “entertainer” is still an extra gratuity. Those security guys know who the local talent is as soon as they enter the lobby, and unless you pay up front you could pay much more later.

These $40-$65 unavoidable fee should be part of the advertised room rate, but they're not. This is the same BS which airlines and AirBNB have been pulling for years. Fees and surcharges that can match or exceed to cost of the advertised price. Cleaning, parking, and laundry room, and hot tub/pool use fees at AirBNBs. New airline rules are in place (thank you President Biden) but some carriers are still plaguing passengers with fees for checked luggage, carryon luggage, itinerary changes, carryon food, and physical tickets, as well as delaying refunds for cancelled flights until the next moon phase.

How much state, county and municipal tax could you end up paying if you book a room at Hotel California? It’s almost impossible for a traveler to figure out beforehand. Anywhere from 10% to 16.25%. But never less than 10, apparently. For further information read both the Los Angeles Municipal code section 21.7.4 and California Revenue and Taxation section 7280. Nevada might look like a bargain, at just 13.xx%, but don’t forget those laptop plug-in fees.

I honestly don't care if Vegas implodes under the weight of all its fees, taxes, and surcharges. Today anyone can lose their life savings through mobile gambling, so we don't need both.

I’m just sayin’ . . .

Don’t forget that they all charge fee fees and ink and paper fees if you want a printed bill.
